As per a report from Spanish outlet Marca this morning, Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale has suffered another setback in his bid to recover full fitness.
Since having enjoyed a stellar, relatively injury-free first two seasonsat the Bernabeu following his move from Premier League outfit Tottenham, Welsh superstar Bale has since become something of a running joke amongst fans in Spain due to his constant injury troubles.
Last season marked a particularly difficult period in the 28-year-old’s career, with Bale managing just 17 LaLiga starts across the entire campaign, as ankle and calf problems kept him out of action for over 4 months combined.
Having endured a hit-and-miss start to the current campaign which resulted in the Blancos star being booed by sections of the Bernabeu crowd, Bale enjoyed a swift upturn in form towards the end of September, netting a scintillating solo effort versus Real Sociedad in La Liga before striking again in the Champions League versus Borussia Dortmund courtesy of a stunning volley.
However, in typically unfortunate fashion for the Welshman, injury soonput an end to his positive run, with a calf problem picked up whilst on international duty having kept him out of action for almost the last two months.
Bale made his return to the pitch during Real’s Copa Del Rey tie with 3rd-tier minnows Fuenlabrada on Tuesday night, playing a key role in both of his side’s goals after being introduced from the bench.
But, as revealed in the aforementioned report from Marca this afternoon, Bale did not feel comfortable leaving the pitch following his side’s 2-2 draw, with his calf once again the cause of concern.
He was forced to sit out training yesterday morning, and is now viewed as a major doubt for Los Blancos’ tough trip to the San Mamesto take on Athletic Bilbao this weekend.
