Chelsea skipper Gary Cahill has claimed that he thinks it is a shame the club sold Mo Salah, who they of course face this weekend when they take on Liverpool.
The winger decided to leave Chelsea for Roma after finding his chances few and far between, and then went on to become one of the best players in Serie A before his move to Liverpool – where he has stepped things up another level and has been spoken of as the Reds’ signing of the season.
Cahill spoke with Standard Sport, and said:
“He found chances limited here but that’s football. You need time to play, you need confidence.
“Speaking from experience, you’re coming into a quality dressing room and it is a very difficult club to break into, to stay here, maintaining a position season after season.
“The competition is always there. Chelsea buy players so you’re always under threat. The club make the decisions and that’s that. But players make the decision, too. If they’re not getting enough game time, they look to leave.
“Sometimes it’s difficult if someone wants to play all the time and doesn’t, what do you do in that situation? I saw the ability Salah had because I trained with him a lot.
“Chelsea fans didn’t see him as muchas we would have hoped to. He has grown into a very good player. But many other players have been released by Chelsea and haven’t gone on.
“He did it brilliantly and has been the signing of the summer. Of course, Chelsea will be kicking themselves. But as a Chelsea player, it was difficult for Salah. There was a lot of talent there and you couldn’t pick everybody.
“What makes him so good now? He has great pace and a really good touch. But what I like about him is that he is always trying to hurt teams in the right way. His movement is brilliant.”
There’s no denying Chelsea have a huge game when they take on Liverpool, and manager Antonio Conte has made his feelings clear on the club having to play so soon after their Champions League game, and it seems that the Blues may struggle with fatigue.
Liverpool may have slipped up against Sevilla, but did have a shorter journey and more rest – and it seems that Klopp’s men may be fresher, with the pace of the likes of Salahand Sadio Mane a real threat to the Blues.
