Petr Cech Explains Why Chelsea Struggled This Season

Chelsea legend Petr Cech has attempted to explain why his former sidehave struggled the season after they have won the Premier League on the last two occasions.

Cech was part of the Chelsea squad that won the league in the 2014/15 season.

The goalkeeper left the following summer to join Arsenal but the Blues struggled the season after, with Manager Jose Mourinho sacked in December with the club near the relegation zone.

After finishing 10th that term, Chelsea brought Antonio Conte in as their new manager and the Italian led them to the title in his first campaign.

But this season Chelsea have laboured yet again and Conte’s long-term future atthe club is uncertain with a top-four spot under threat.

Cech is surprised with Chelsea’s struggles but says small changes will have dented confidence and led to a string of poor results.

“Well it’s very hard to tell you know,” Cech said while working as a pundit on BBC One.

“The team has stayed more or less together obviously and the manager stayed there and he got the chance.

“When you win the league in your first season it’s the best possible start because obviously people get to trust you.

“I think you make yourself a name and the players know you, the continuity can be there.

“So sometimes it is very surprising when the odd season goes completely wrong.

“It might be just the fact that something goes slightly different and you try to think too much about it and then once you get in a few bad results on the spin it can change the confidence of the team.”
